The rest of the evening, Connor is too busy to consult with Liam any further. Not willing to face the crowd, go home, or even to run the forest for fear of coming across any more members of the pack, Liam stays in the kitchen helping to fill all the food orders.

The cook is a young teenager from town who doesn't ask any questions. He keeps his head down, his hands busy, and his ear buds in, which gives Liam some much needed privacy to sort out how to handle the fight tonight.

The evening passes quickly, and after the last orders come in, Liam and the cook run down the line of fryers. Flipping them off, Liam turns to the teenager and shakes his hand.

"Thank you."

The teenager gives him a confused look. "No problem, man. Um…anytime?"

"Sure thing, pal," Liam says over his shoulder, leaving the back way. The fight is supposed to begin in ten minutes, and Liam has finally worked out a solution. Everything will turn out all right, as long as Alaric doesn’t get in the way.

The walk to the warehouse goes quickly. When Liam enters, he is encased in the crowd at once. Pack members give him last minute advice or simply a slap on the back. Liam makes his way through the crowd muttering his thanks. Cracked concrete gives way to a dirt floor, and there is a distinct odor of rusty nails.

"You got this?" Connor pulls Liam from the last of the crowd.

"Yeah." Liam rolls out his shoulders and removes his shirt. "Is Alaric here?"

"In the back. Staying kind of quiet."

"Just make sure he stays—and can see."

"Okay…"

"I'm serious. This'll only work with him here. Have you seen Darcy yet? We might need her."

"Not yet." Connor shakes his head. "You gonna let me in on the plan?"

Liam glances around, leaning in closer to Connor. But as soon as he opens his mouth, the loudspeaker blares with an electronic whine.

"Testing, testing—" The speaker cuts off with a bout of coughing after the announcer inhales a year's worth of dust off of the microphone.

With no time for explanations, Liam gives Connor an apologetic smile. Still stretching, he enters the makeshift ring which consists of old tires fashioned into a large circle. Half the fun of the fights is watching the contestants bounce off the ring after a hard hit.

"Okay fighters." Connor enters the ring along with Liam. "The rules tonight—no weapons, no wolves. Stay in the ring."

Liam lifts his eyebrow. Connor is to be the ref. Hopefully he doesn't stop the fight too soon.

"If you stay down for a count of ten, it's a loss. If you submit, it's a loss. I will accept a tap-out or audible statement as a submission. Got it?"

Rand nods, but Liam is too busy staring at the inside arms of his opponent. Fresh blood trickles down at least four pinprick holes. He's been given blood, a lot of it—and fairly recently.

"Liam? Got it?" Connor says louder.

Eyes blazing, Liam looks up at his opponent.
